Volodymyr Zelensky has warned Russia would have a clear run at capturing the east of his country if it seizes Bakhmut.
He warned: "After Bakhmut they could go to Kramatorsk, they could go to Sloviansk, it would be an open road for the Russians after Bakhmut to other towns in the Donetsk direction. That's why our guys are standing there."
Mr Zelensky, who hosted the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Kyiv yesterday and discussed grain said: needs exports, "Russia some victory - a small victory even by ruining everything in Bakhmut, just killing every civilian there."
