Growing up in South London I was always hearing about the Commonwealth. I wasn’t quite sure what they did but my family came from Jamaica so I knew it was important to them.
I’d have never guessed all these years later that I’d be privileged to be Platinum Jubilee Global Ambassador for the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust.
I couldn’t believe there are 2.5 billion people in the Commonwealth and that’s almost a third of everyone in the world. I take this role very seriously and I’ve been finding out as much as possible about the organisation.
Recently I met one of the young leaders supported by the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, Bukola “Bukky” Bolarinwa from Nigeria. She was so inspirational and a bundle of energy and has done some incredible work getting people to donate blood in Nigeria with her charity, Haima Health Initiative.
Then I heard about Stephen Katende from Uganda, another of the young leaders funded by the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust who, through his organisation Kisoboka Africa, has helped organise people to meet in schools in villages where he lives and to create their own businesses – including weaving baskets and herding goats.
