The world No1 could still be barred from competing in the tournament as immigration minister Alex Hawke was still deciding whether to cancel Djokovic’s visa.
A decision was expected this morning but has now been deferred until at least tomorrow, and tennis bosses opted to include the 20-times Grand Slam winner in the first round draw where he was pitted against fellow Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.
Djokovic, who is not vaccinated, admitted yesterday that he had flouted Serbian Covid-19 isolation rules when he met a French journalist after testing positive for the virus. He blamed an “error of judgment” but now faces further tough questions about whether he broke Spain’s emergency travel restrictions when he travelled to his training base in Marbella last month.
