Russia Reports 9,434 New Coronavirus Infections

Russia will see a sharp rise in the mortality figures for May, say officials, as the coronavirus death toll rises. Illness and chronic conditions don’t always have a positive ending, says deputy PM

Russia said on Saturday that 9,434 new cases of the novel coronavirus had been reported in the last 24 hours, pushing its nationwide tally to 335,882.

The country’s coronavirus crisis response centre reported 139 new fatalities after a record of 150 deaths the day before, bringing the death toll to 3,388.

“There will be a significant mortality increase in May” Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova said at a government meeting with President Vladimir Putin, referring to official analysis and the country’s coronavirus curve.

“The illness and chronic conditions don’t always have a positive ending,” Golikova said, despite doctors trying to “save the maximum number of patients.”

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin also said the capital’s death toll for May would be “considerably higher than in April.”
