Spain, Italy See Sharp Drop In Daily Coronavirus Deaths Toll

Europe is the worst-hit continent with a total of 100,501 fatalities; Spain to allow children outside after six weeks of confinement under strict virus lockdown

Spain registered a sharp drop in its daily death toll from the novel coronavirus on Sunday with 410 new fatalities — the lowest in almost a month.

“It’s a number that gives us hope,” said health ministry emergencies coordinator Fernando Simon. “It’s the first time we are under 500 dead since the daily tolls began to climb.” Infections rose to 195,344, with 4,218 new cases in the past 24 hours. But Simon admitted the fall in the number of deaths from Saturday to Sunday can be explained by the lower registration of fatalities over the weekend. Such a drop is often followed by a rise at the start of the week.

Italy’s official daily toll from the coronavirus edged down to 433 on Sunday, the lowest figure in one week.

The total number of deaths reported by the civil protection services since the start of Italy’s health crisis in February now stands at 23,660 — second only to the United States. Sunday’s fatalities figure was the second-lowest in one month.

The 3,047 new virus infections represented a rise of just 1.7 per cent.
