Tamil Nadu has climbed to the third position among COVID-19 infected states in India surpassing Delhi, as the state reported 7,204 infections by Monday morning.
The health department said 669 more tested positive on Sunday, including a single-day high of 509 in Chennai. Three more people died, taking the toll to 47.
A bulletin issued by the Health and Family Welfare department said most numbers of cases were linked to Chennai’s Koyambedu wholesale market, with 669 reported from 19 districts.
More than 3,000 positive cases were reported in the last six days alone when compared to 4,058 cases on May 5.
Officials said the increase is due to targeted testing.
A 74-year-old man from Chengalpattu, admitted on May 8, died at Chengalpattu Medical College and tested Covid positive on Sunday. A man of 59, with Type-2 diabetes and coronary artery disease from Chennai, admitted on May 7 at Stanley MCH died on Sunday.
The other death was reported at Kilpauk MCH when a 55-year-old man with chronic kidney disease, Type-2 diabetes and Systemic Hypertension from Tiruvallur, died and was tested positive on Monday.
