Groom Attacked Bride's Uncle With An Iron
A GROOM hit an uncle of the bride over the head with an iron during a “serious altercation” at his wedding reception, a court heard.

It was claimed Brendan Cloherty, 34, lashed out and struck the victim several times after he had feared for his safety.

Yesterday, the accused avoided jail for the attack at the Lady Gregory Hotel in Gort, Co Galway, on July 19, 2019.

Judge Patrick Durcan gave Cloherty a suspended eight-month prison term for the assault causing harm and producing a weapon, a clothes iron, during the incident.

The defendant, from Castlepark, Galway, admitted both offences.

Judge Durcan stated “this was a totally unnecessary incident” where Cloherty could not manage the amount of alcohol he had taken as he wasn’t used to it.

The judge told him: “My advice to you is to keep your hands in your pockets in future.”
