Noted filmmaker Shyam Benegal called the FIR against 49 celebrities the “theatre of the absurd”. A National Award winner, Benegal was in Delhi on Sunday to meet Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as he has been roped in for a film project produced jointly by India and Bangladesh.
Speaking to India Today, the acclaimed director said, “Here I am a part of meeting on IndiaBangladesh project at the highest possible level with an FIR with sedition charges slapped against me. I don’t have a slightest idea of what is happening.”
Benegal said that their open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “innocuous” in nature with no threat to anyone.
“We were voicing concern over growing incidents of mob lynching, which was just an appeal and not any threat. The charge of sedition was quite surprising,” he added.
