The two prime ministers also reflected on "the importance of working together to tackle shared challenges such as illegal migration" and people trafficking in Europe, according to No 10.

A spokesman said: "The prime minister and prime minister Rutte agreed they would work to build an international coalition to provide Ukraine with combat air capabilities, supporting with everything from training to procuring F-16 jets." Sunak also used his centre stage spot at the opening of the Council of Europe in Reykjavik last night to push for cooperation to tackle "illegal" migration, as he seeks to reassert his authority over the restless right of his party.

He sought to enlist the support of European leaders for his plans to detain and remove illegal immigrants linking what he said were "lessons" of the Ukraine war to the need to confront other threats such as illegal migration.
