Tension prevailed at the Tidel Park junction on Rajiv Gandhi Salai late on Friday as residents agitated against traffic restrictions.
Traffic on the arterial road was blocked to enable the convoy of Chinese President Xi Jinping pass through to reach the hotel. Residents stranded on the Rajiv Gandhi Salai for over two hours from 7 p.m. were agitated as they were not allowed to walk or cross the road. As the Chinese President’s convoy started over an hour late from Mamallapuram, the police restricted access to the road.
Besides several motorists, many pedestrians were also stopped from walking on the stretch. After waiting for hours, some residents argued with the police to let them cross the road. For a while, the police let the people cross the road, after which the stretch was barricaded again.
