Venom may not be the most famous superhero in the Marvel stable, but he is certainly one of the most profitable.
An anti-hero character who first appeared on screen in Spider-Man 3 (2007), he got his own standalone movie, Venom, in 2018.
Despite withering reviews, it was a sleeper hit, earning US$856 million (S$1.16 billion) worldwide and replacing Wonder Woman (2017) as the highest-grossing superhero origin story of all time.
More than US$260 million of that came from China, where it became the biggest solo superhero film in December 2018 – the same month that romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians bombed with just US$1.2 million in receipts.
And star Tom Hardy believes the sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage – which opens in Singapore cinemas today – is a better movie than the first.
The 44-year-old English actor plays Eddie Brock, a man who acquires superhuman powers when his body merges with a symbiotic alien creature named Venom and the two are forced into an uneasy alliance.
