Britain’s care homes are becoming a “ticking timebomb” in the pandemic, it was claimed yesterday.
And the Government has been accused of doing nothing to stop it despite the terrifying rate at which coronavirus is sweeping through the social care system.
MP Peter Kyle reveals he warned Prime Minister Boris Johnson ELEVEN days ago that lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) and failures to test staff and agency workers at UK nursing homes with 500,000 “at-risk” residents made them a breeding ground for the virus.
Since then, a home in his own constituency has seen nearly all the residents develop symptoms with one suspected Covid-19 death and a care worker having to be taken in intensive care.
Meanwhile, suspected outbreaks at two homes in Glasgow and Liverpool have left 19 people dead. “Care homes are a ticking timebomb,” said Labour’s Mr Kyle. “The system is delivering infection into homes and spreading it between them. Government policy is leading to loss of life.”
