Coronavirus is killing someone every nine and a half minutes in New York – with Donald Trump thinking of putting the entire city in quarantine.
It emerged yesterday 151 people had died of the virus there in 24 hours with the total number of infected rising to 29,158, up by 2,461 overnight.
The figures came as the world’s most infected country neared 116,000 with Covid-19 last night.
New York has suffered more than a third of the US death toll.
More than 5,200 New Yorkers have been hospitalised with 1,175 in intensive care.
“9/11 was nothing compared to this,” said Dr Steve Kassapidis at Mount Sinai hospital in New York’s Queens borough.
HOTSPOT
“It’s biblical. People come in, they get intubated, they die, the cycle repeats.” Dr Emad Youssef of Brooklyn’s Brookdale added: “The hospitals look like a war zone.”
Trump said yesterday: “We’d like to see New York quarantined because it’s a hotspot — New Jersey, maybe one or two other places. I’m thinking about that right now.
