Covid Continues To Make Waves, 4k New Cases

New Delhi:The positivity rate of Covid-19 in Delhi breached the 5% mark on Monday with 4,099 people, or 6.46% of the total 63,477 people who were tested for the viral infection in the last 24 hours, testing positive. One fresh fatality was also reported, taking the toll to 25,110.

Under the Delhi Disaster Management Authority-approved Graded Response Action Plan, if the positivity rate remains over 5% for two consecutive days, it would trigger a red alert leading to a “total curfew”.

The city reported 3,194 Covid-19 cases with a positivity rate of 4.59% on Sunday and 2,716 cases with a positivity rate of 3.6% on Saturday. On Friday and Thursday, 1,796 and 1,313 cases were recorded with a positivity rate of 1.73% and 2.44%, respectively.

Several resident doctors at Safdarjung and AIIMS — two major public hospitals — have also tested positive for the viral infection, sources said.

Health minister Satyendar Jain said the spike in cases was caused mainly due to the spread of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV2.

“In the last few days, 187 reports of genome sequencing have come. Out of these, 152 people were found Omicron-positive. Omicron is now the dominant variant in Delhi with around 81% of the total cases,” he added.
