A few days ago, South African researchers flagged the emergence of C.1.2, a new variant of the Covid-causing SARS-CoV-2 virus. It hasn’t yet been christened with a Greek alphabet, but seems, genetically speaking, to be a part of the Beta family that was first discovered in South Africa last year. C.1.2 was found in a few Covidpositive samples in May, but accounted for almost 2% of the cases detected in South Africa in July.
What are the implications for India?
Barely a week back, the World Health Organisation’s chief scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan indicated India could be in “some kind” of endemicity as far as the Covid-19 infection is concerned. That would mean the country would report a few hundred/thousand cases throughout the year instead of the periodic mega waves we now associate with Covid. It is believed the Delta variant, first found in India and anointed as the fittest ‘avatar’ of SARS-CoV-2 for now, triggered herd immunity, downgrading the pandemic status to an endemic one. But the emergence of C.1.2, which has spread throughout South Africa and six other nations in three months, might force another change in theories.
How is C.1.2 related to the Wuhan strain?
