Chennai: It’s been 14 months since Test cricket was last played in India. The wait has been long and a lot has happened since that pink-ball Test at Eden Gardens in November 2019. The Indian team’s success in Australia gave the country a bit of relief at a time when it was trying to deal with all that was lost in times of Covid.
It’s not that all the turmoil is over. Even the cricketers, living inside the bio-bubble, are discussing farmers’ protests that are raging across the country, as revealed by captain Virat Kohli. But then, cricket, too is back home, probably as a welcome distraction from the difficulties of our day to day realities.
And of course, there’s a lot at stake when two World Test championship final contenders India and England play. Information is hard to come by with so many protocols in place and mind games are being played as the rivals try to keep each other guessing till the last moment. Even about the nature of the pitch, the generally candid English skipper Joe Root and his outspoken Indian counterpart Kohli seemed to be cagey on the eve of the series-opener.
