BoycottBollywoodDruggies — this insidious hashtag with its implication of a rampant culture of drugs and addiction in Bollywood — made social media jump in outrage on Monday. Barely a day had gone by when the hashtag #BollywoodDirt picked up the baton with posts like “These Charsi people are very dangerous for our Country, Culture and Civilization. Agree?” A third hashtag chimed in the next day — #BollyDawoodKilledSSR. For the next three days, these hashtags were trending on the top spot of Twitter India, achieving their aim of agitating people.
A closer examination of these hashtag rallies threw up a few recurring names that seem to start and steer this daily ‘blood sport’ on Twitter. Although a few men do not a movement make, TOI spoke to some of the people behind these handles to understand who they are, why they do this, and how they manage to hold sway over social media.
