American voters went to the polls on Tuesday to write the final chapter of a bitterly fought presidential campaign, amid a coronavirus pandemic that has claimed more than 230,000 lives in the US. But while Election Day always provokes anxiety, this one felt especially unnerving.
Officials and business owners across the US braced for potential rioting, violence, vandalism or voter intimidation. Retailers and banks from Boston to Philadelphia and beyond beefed up security. Disney and Saks Fifth Avenue were among the brand-name stories in Manhattan that boarded up their windows. And Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills has been closed for Election Day and the day after.
It may take some time for the final results to be announced, but the tea leaves will become apparent in Florida and the so-called sunbelt, where polls close at 7pm (5.30 am IST). Two other nearby states are also expected to indicate which way the wind is blowing: Georgia and North Carolina.
