When Becks Krishnan was born in November 1976 in Irinjalakkuda, Thrissur, his father Krishnan Shanku was working in Abu Dhabi. When Krishnan shared his joy of fatherhood with his German friend, he suggested naming the boy ‘Becks’—–meaning a stream. Though most of the family members objected to the unusual name and preferred Sajeev (many of them stuck with it), the couple went with Becks Krishnan hoping his life would flow smooth and clear like a stream.
And so it did for the next 36 years. Becks graduated as an automobile engineer, got a job in Abu Dhabi, married Veena, and became father to Adwaith. But it all changed on September 13, 2012, when the car he was driving in Abu Dhabi killed a six-year-old Sudanese boy. Becks claims it was an accident and that the boy fell in front of his car and he couldn’t brake in time, but the investigators slapped murder charges on him and the Abu Dhabi Supreme Court sentenced him to be executed by firing squad.
