The popularity of shows like Korean phenomenon Squid Game and Spanish show Money Heist has indicated that the dominance of English shows globally is receding. While non-English ‘international’ content has been around for decades, the proliferation of OTT platforms of late has caused a democratisation of that content around the world. Today’s viewers have access to so many films and shows from around the world that they never had earlier. And the presence of non English shows in the most watched series lists taken out by various platforms is proof that the viewers are making use of this opportunity.
‘THE ONE-INCH SUBTITLE BARRIER DOESN’T EXIST’
When Korean film Parasite won the Best Picture Oscar in January 2020, director Bon Joon Ho had said, “Once you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” It seems people have listened. Because, increasingly, viewers are choosing to disregard the language of the content and that one-inch barrier doesn’t seem to matter to many. Delhi-based film fanatic Shivashish Chanda is a self-professed fan of shows like Fauda (Israeli action show in Hebrew) and Undercover (Dutch crime drama). “I watch all these in their original languages even though English dubbed versions are available,” he tells us, “I think the emotion and authenticity captured in the original audio is something dubbing can’t replicate. The connect is much quicker.”
