Tiger Tyagarajan, CEO of Genpact, says they closed the latest quarterly accounts books of more than 200 clients – all of them among the biggest public companies in the world – from a remote environment. Almost all employees, of both Genpact and its clients, were working from home. Tyagarajan says 98% of those closings happened half-a-day to two days faster than ever before. The remaining 2% happened on time.
The use of Zoom, Teams, and other collaboration technologies allowed problems to be resolved very differently. He says if one of the businesses in the Brazilian subsidiary of a global company (a Genpact client) had to take a decision about the right accounting entry to pass in a transaction, then it would involve a discussion between the Brazilian subsidiary, the business unit, the corporate headquarters and Genpact. “That typically used to be an email traffic that goes between Brazil and say the Ohio headquarters, North America regional headquarters, and our team, and that might take maybe 36 hours. In this (current virtual) environment, they quickly get onto a call, and about 30 minutes later, the decision is made,” Tyagarajan says.
