Glasgow: The 26th session of the UN climate conference (COP26) is all set to conclude on Saturday after accommodating India’s concerns on the phase-out of coal and fossil fuel subsidies. A change from ‘phase-out’ to ‘phasedown’ was agreed upon during the last-minute change to build the consensus.
India forced the Presidency to change the para on coal and fossil fuel by including a point on national circumstances even as Switzerland and EU objected to it and then reluctantly agreed. Besides including a decision for the first time on accelerated ‘phasing down of coal and ‘phasing-out of “inefficient fossil fuel subsidies in the final outcome, the Conference also agreed to further boost 2030 climate targets by next year and double adaptation finance by 2025.
