It was an evening of avoidable losses. For Naomi Osaka, for Roland Garros. And tennis in totality.
It need not have come to this. A 23-year-old superstar pulling out of an event that is one of the sport’s four pillars.
In a social media post three days before the start of the French Open, Osaka declared she would not be doing press conferences for the fortnight. Among the reasons the world No. 2 listed was questions that ‘bring doubt into our minds.
Osaka’s sister Mari, while expanding on her younger sibling’s quandary, said a family member had remarked that she was bad on clay, sowing doubts. “At every press conference, she’s told she has a bad record on clay,” Mari noted in a social media post she has since deleted.
Osaka added: “If organizations think they can continue to ignore the mental health of players that are the centrepiece of their cooperation (corporation), then I just gotta laugh.”
