Law On Obscenity
Criminal law in India makes obscene acts in public an offence
Section 294 (IPC): Obscene acts, singing an obscene song or uttering obscene words in or near public places to annoyance of others are offences
Punishment: Jail term of up to three months, or fine or both
Section 292 (IPC): Sell, distribute, publicly exhibit obscene book, pamphlet, paper, writing, drawing, painting representation, figures. Obscene if it is lascivious or appeals to prurient interest or if its effect depraves and corrupts. But this section does not apply if book or written matter is for the public good and in the interest of science, literature, art or learning
Punishment: First conviction attracts imprisonment of up to 2 years and a fine of up to ₹2,000. Subsequent conviction can lead to a five-year jail term or a fine of ₹5,000
