Uber has said that low estimates for driver's wages are inaccurate and that the median driver earns $33.35 per "engaged hour," as of late 2023.
Toronto ride-hail drivers earn an average of $6.37, well below Ontario's minimum wage of $16.55, after costs related to using a personal vehicle for work are factored in, according to a new report from RideFairTO on Monday.
The advocacy group working to regulate ride-hailing said Toronto's drivers collectively lose as much as $200 million as a result of earnings below the province's hourly minimum wage floor.
The report compiled data from the City of Toronto and the Canada Revenue Agency and includes estimates from Uber made in statements over minimum wage earnings. Also used for the report are 96 screenshots of weekly pay statements submitted by Toronto ridehail drivers between October 2023 and January 2024, which "paint a picture in which drivers' hourly pay is frequently below Ontario's $16.55 hourly minimum wage even before expenses were considered." After estimated expenses are taken to account - including fuel, car insurance and maintenance "none of the 96 weekly pay statements reached Ontario's $16.55 minimum hourly wage," the report said, adding that "in many cases drivers lost money." The employment status and wages of gig workers working for ridehail companies has become a growing concern at city hall. The number of ride-hailing and delivery gig workers has surged, driven largely by newcomers seeking quick income.
