In a world saturated with electronics and technology, keeping your child’s screen time exposure to a healthy amount isn’t always easy. But helping them to learn to be less dependent on their gadgets is an important lesson we shouldn’t miss out on.
In today’s high-tech world, children now have access to screens from a young age. The strengths of digital devices are that they are fun and easy to use, but these merits become a bane when simple enjoyment turns to addiction. A study on children across the US, published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, confirmed what have so far been anecdotal observations – children who spend more than two hours on screens every day tend to perform more poorly on cognitive tests.
Knowing this, it can be tempting to just ban your rugrats from technology. But with Singapore striving to become a Smart Nation and schools employing digital learning experiences for younger students, this seems impractical.
The question then is how to teach our little ones to be less dependent on gadgets. If they are able to use technology in moderation and enjoy other valuable life experiences with you without throwing a fit, that’s a triumph worth celebrating.
