THE PLAY OF LIGHTS AND SHADOWS
Asian Photography|May 2020
ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY IS INCOMPLETE WITHOUT LIGHTS AND SHADOWS. THE MORE YOU PLAY WITH IT THE MORE YOU WILL BE SURPRISED WITH THE AMAZING RESULTS. TECHNICALLY, IF ONE REALLY WANTS TO MASTER THE ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY, THEN THEY MUST UNDERSTAND THE VERY NATURE OF LIGHT AND SHADOWS. HOW TO PLAY WITH THEM AND HOW IT CAN ACT AS A POWERFUL TOOL TO CREATE AN IMPACT, YET MAKE IT LOOK EFFORTLESS. WHILE SHOOTING LIGHT AND SHADOWS MAKE SURE THAT YOU FIRST UNDERSTAND THE NUANCES OF NATURAL AS WELL AS ARTIFICIAL LIGHT. ALSO, HOW THEY BEHAVE IN SPECIFIC CONTEXT FOR SHADOWS TO FALL IN PLACE. ONCE WE BEGIN TO PLACE A SUBJECT IN DIRECT LIGHT THEN IT MAY START APPEARING FLAT TO THE BEHOLDER. BUT IF WE MAKE USE OF SHADOWS ALONG WITH IT THEN IT ADDS A DEPTH TO THE PICTURE ADDING DIMENSIONS TO IT. WHEN ONE IS TRYING TO CREATE A PICTURE-PERFECT SCENARIO THEN THAT PICTURE MUST CONSIST OF BLACK, WHITE AND GREY TONES TO BRING A SENSE OF COMPLETION TO THE FRAME. USUALLY THIS TECHNIQUE IS USED TO CAPTURE ABSTRACT OR MYSTERIOUS PHOTOGRAPHS AND SILHOUETTES. SPECIFICALLY, THE HIGH CONTRAST LIGHTING AND SHADOWS TOGETHER CREATE EXCLUSIVE STANDPOINTS IN MONOCHROME.

Capture beauty of the Golden Hour

Let us understand the fundamentals of golden hour. the only unadulterated source of energy within our constellation which creates light and shadows on earth i.e. sun gives us an opportunity to seize those mesmerising moments twice a day. they appear just after sunrise and before sunset and lasts for about 20 minutes. but the colour of light literally appears golden with ultra-long shadows offering us myriad possibilities to embrace remarkable images. great silhouettes are achieved by using the Sun as a magnificent tool for backlighting to capture breathtaking pictures during the golden hour.

Shoot in Harsh Sunlight

Golden hour is not the only time when one can click remarkable images. if one has the vision and necessary tools to accompany then it can create wonders. harsh sunlight generally debilitates the usual styles within the photography as it tends to lose details, but in case of shadow photography it becomes of prime importance creating a strong sense of contrast.

This type of light works well with architectural photography and shooting other geometrical objects. perfect composition with proper use of shadows in framing, creates unique visual impact and take pictures to a different dimension.

Similarly, when you are sitting in your garden or you saw natural sunlight coming through the window, start testing different kind of objects against the sunlight. it will create unique patterns and some forms in your frame. look into details and experiment with different angles and combinations of materials available within your house.

Why fear artificial light?
