Meet 100 Women

Editorial photographer Anita Corbin explains how she came to take the portraits of 100 pioneering women over the past decade…

First Women UK is a visual celebration of how far women have come in the past 100 years, told through 100 iconic portraits of pioneering Women who are ‘firsts’ in their fields of endeavour: from bomb detection to beatboxing; from blast furnace management to sheepdog training.

I’ve been a photographer all my life and for a long time I’ve asked myself: ‘how was society acknowledging our contemporary trailblazing females?’ I wanted to create a body of work that would be my legacy, so that in 100 years from now, people could look back and see how far we have come – marking the centenary of women ‘winning the right to vote’. I wanted to shine a light on the achievements of these women who were creating a new reality and rewriting history – or should we say herstory?
