The search for the world’s best Nikon photographer of 2019 continues! Each issue the monthly N-Photo POTY 2019 photo contest’s top 10 images are selected by the N-Photo team – along with a guest judge. This issue’s competition has the theme of summer landscapes, and who better to join our judging panel than prolific pro landscape photographer Nigel Danson?
1. Iceland Summer Sunset
BY WAYNE KLIEWER
What an amazing painterly image! HDR can often look overcooked, but here the photographer has produced a subtle rendition that captures everything from the brightest sky to the darkest shadows. The framing, with the sun setting behind the mountain, avoids the image blowing out.
Camera: Nikon D810
Lens: 14-24mm f/2.8
Exposure: Five shots 1/4 sec-4 secs, f/22, ISO64
2. Interessanter Regenbogen
BY ROBERT JUVET
A magical scene. The f/5 aperture means that depth of field is shallow for a landscape, but as the interest is in the distant lighted areas, this is unimportant. The settings suggest that this was taken with no tripod, but the moment may have been missed if they’d tried to set one up.
Camera: Nikon D850
Lens: 15-30mm f/2.8
Exposure: 1/80 sec, f/5, ISO250
3. Provence Tree
BY STEVE OLDFIELD
For this month’s summer landscapes competition, we had many entrants submitting gorgeous fields of lavender, but this is our favourite. The vivid furrows of lavender make for some wonderful leading lines that direct the gaze to the lone tree. The photographer’s choice to make use of a square crop was also a smart decision, that results in a meticulously balanced photograph.
Camera: Nikon D810
Lens: 70-200mm f/4
Exposure: 1 sec, f/16, ISO100
4. Lindisfarne Castle
BY TRUDY KEPKE
