Laos

The barren landscapes and hazy light of Laos didn't appeal to David, however, he didn't let that stop him from photographing the local faces full of character
Laos

Vang Vieng, Laos. 16:31pm. 3 August 2009.

The view from Vang Vieng over the Mekong River to the Karst mountains beyond was spectacular. There was just one problem; we could barely see it.

Thick, heavy, smog lay over northern Laos and this time I wasn’t rueing Mother Nature’s contrariness – it was all the work of man. The practise of slash and burn agriculture, established over generations to stimulate new growth, had left the countryside looking post-apocalyptic and dumped huge amounts of ash into the heavy atmosphere. It seemed an act of short-sighted eco-vandalism, and bad news for us as any shoots of distant views would be impossible.
