When survival horror specialist Tango Gameworks announced it was working on a story-driven ghosthunting action adventure back in 2019, it came as quite a surprise. The Evil Within developer’s games have never been for the squeamish or faint of heart, but that’s what you’d expect from a studio founded by Shinji Mikami, the man behind the Resident Evil series.
The studio has gone in an entirely new direction with Ghostwire: Tokyo, but that doesn’t mean its horror roots have been ghosted. Ghostwire is an adventure with Japanese mythology at its core, so get ready for tales of vengeful spirits, creepy phantoms, and deadly yokai. There’s plenty of horror potential (you’re a ghost hunter, after all) but instead of helplessly running away and scavenging to survive, in Ghostwire: Tokyo you take a much more confrontational approach and exorcise those vengeful spirits.
