Eddie Jones enjoys a great night’s ratting with the help of a new tripod

Support Act!

Recently, I was asked if I would like to tackle a few rats that a farmer was having problems with, and I love rat shooting, whether it’s a slow night waiting for them to emerge from their burrows, or a frantic session when there is never a minute without seeing one. It was also a good opportunity to give the Ultimate Sporter a run out – it’s been a while since I used it – and to test a Wicked Lights Rekon Shooting Tripod system that I’d received from Scott Country. I’ve been using the Rekon tripod for a good while on my fox outings, but this ratting session would show me just how versatile it really is.

The Rekon is a shooting-specific, rifle-rest platform, tripod system adopted by the shooting sports market for long-range precision rifle shooting and that’s why I had it for my fox shooting, but it’s good for any air rifle shooting, too, because once you have your rifle fixed into the pig saddle, it allows you to be free-standing with 360-degree movement.

The Rekon is made from advanced material components and consists of four-section, carbon-fibre tripod legs that can be inverted and folded back 180 degrees to 18 inches- making it small enough to carry in a back-pack, or hand held. Three leg-angle positions provide flexibility and enable shooting in cramped quarters, or on irregular surface areas, and the tripod feet are equipped with removable rubbers stops that can be replaced with metal spikes, which are included. A precision ball-head BH-1 attaches to the carbon tripod CT-1 and comes complete with Arca-Swiss to Picatinny adaptor, allowing fitment to a Picatinny rail, or you can use the pig saddle as I have.
