Allen made seven all-star teams, posted a .292/.378/.534 slash line, hit 351 home runs, and drove in 1,119 runs. In 1972, he led the AL in home runs (37), RBIs (113), walks (99), OBP (.420), and slugging percentage (.603).
JAIRO CASTILLO, an international crosschecker for the Dodgers in the Dominican Republic who previously worked for the Brewers and Blue Jays as a scout after playing three seasons in the Dominican Summer League for the Mets from 2007-09, died Dec. 8. He was 31.
LON JOYCE, who served as head baseball coach at Spartanburg (S.C.) Methodist JC from 1978-91 and posted a 473-170 record before later working as an amateur scout for the Dodgers starting in 1992, died Dec. 3 in Spartanburg, S.C. He was 72.
Joyce guided Spartanburg to seven conference championships and two appearances in the NJCAA World Series. He helped develop Reggie Sanders and other future big leaguers.

Aaron Judge and Oneil Cruz are 6-foot7 sluggers who stand out for their power in this year’s MLB Best Tools voting. Wood spent half of this season with Triple-A Rochester before making his MLB debut on July 1. While he was in the International League, he captured managers’ attention. Wood unanimously won Best Power Prospect and also claimed Most Exciting Player in a survey of league skippers. Wood hit .353/.463/.595 with 10 home runs in 52 games for Rochester. His .242 isolated slugging was the best for a player 21 or younger at Triple-A this season.
