Quiet Explosion
Beckett Baseball|October 2017

In a year in which his Marlins seemingly are out of the playoff picture, GIANCARLO STANTON continues his historic assault on baseballs. Has anyone noticed what is happening near South Beach?

Quiet Explosion

Giancarlo Stanton must have been tired of the Aaron Judge comparisons. Before Judge arrived in the Bronx, Stanton was the undisputed King of the Home Run in the MLB.

Stanton was the biggest, baddest, strongest long ball hitter in the league, and then a man with at least an inch of height and about 40 pounds on him started hitting balls even farther and at an even more impressive rate. And, to add insult to injury, Judge’s coming out party at this year’s Home Run Derby happened in Stanton’s home stadium in Miami. Meanwhile, Stanton was eliminated in the first round.

Judge had arrived and Stanton seemed to be taking a backseat. Just look at the fervor for Aaron Judge’s cards, they’ve reached a height that Stanton’s never have. You can’t blame Stanton though. The backing of the NY media and fan base is hard to compete with in South Florida.

Junk Wax Era 1988 Score

The rise in the popularity of baseball cards that would lead up to the Junk Wax Era began as early as the late 1970s, and the introduction of two new manufacturers helped spur further growth in the early 1980s. But the interest in baseball cards would reach a fever pitch by 1988, which would mark the first year since 1981 that a new manufacturer would enter the fold.
