Afghanistan clocked their biggest win in their ICC Cricket World Cup history after defeating champions England on Sunday in Delhi. Afghanistan stunned the Englishmen after posting 284/10. Notably, the Afghans were cruising along at one stage, as the openers added 114 runs. England fought back and forced a collapse. However, a valiant knock from Ikram Alikhil helped the Afghans post a competitive score of 284. For England, Adil Rashid led the way with a three-wicket haul. Liam Livingstone and Joe Root did well too. In response, England, who have a strong batting line-up, faltered in key moments. No major partnerships were on offer, and barring Harry Brook, nobody went on to put a price on their wicket. Notably, the Afghan spin trio of Mujeeb ur Rahman, Rashid Khan, and Mohammad Nahi claimed eight wickets between them to stall Jos Buttler’s men, who suffered their second defeat from three games in the ongoing 2023 World Cup.
Here are the massive records broken.
2nd WIN FOR AFGHANISTAN IN WORLD CUP HISTORY
Playing just their 16th match in the Cricket World Cup, the Afghans picked up their second win ever. Afghanistan’s only win at the World Cup before this was against Scotland in the 2015 edition, when they won by one wicket. Notably, Afghanistan lost all of their nine games in the 2019 edition and suffered massive defeats before this win against England.
MAIDEN ODI WIN OVER ENGLAND
Afghanistan, who played just their third ODI versus England, claimed their maiden win over them. Before this, Afghanistan suffered a massive 150-run defeat in the 2019 World Cup and a nine-wicket loss in the 2015 World Cup.
