5 MUST STAY HEALTHY NAVORRO BOWMAN: On the way to a potential Hall of Fame career, Bowman has been sidelined twice in the past three years by career-

It’s another summer reset for the 49ers in 2017, and the rebirth that offers this time to a staggering franchise carries plenty of significance as the team settles in for the first training camp of the John Lynch/Kyle Shanahan era.

With new leadership in place and a revamped roster, the Niners will attempt in earnest to rebuild a proud organization that crashed and burned to the bottom of the NFL last season under the team’s previous management/coaching regime.

When players report to team headquarters in Santa Clara on July 27, the Niners have a lot of work in front of them to become relevant again in the football world while taking the first steps toward reaching their ultimate goal of returning to the glory days of yore.

Here, The Niner Report compiles a list and provides a breakdown and projections of the key focal points of training camp, hoping to guide you through several of the important issues surrounding the team as it picks up the pieces and enters an uncertain future with renewed focus and determination.

STARTING ALL OVER AGAIN: Here the 49ers go again, putting on new training wheels after another year of running in place and getting nowhere. They enter 2017 training camp with their fourth different head coach in as many years, and this time that coach comes attached with a new general manager who’s considered his equal in the new organizational structure. With a 90-player summer roster featuring more new faces than old, the 49ers are truly hitting the re-start button and setting in place a new foundation on which to build.

Making the right choice at QB

In the weeks that follow after you read this — and perhaps sometime even sooner than that — Kyle Shanahan and the rest of the 49ers organization will make a titanic decision that will have present, future and perhaps even everlasting implications for the franchise. It will chart the course for the team’s pivotal 2021 season while determining whether San Francisco really does have the juice to return to powerhouse status and again be considered a legitimate contender to get back to the Super Bowl.

TOP 10 Linebacker seasons

Fred Warner vaulted to stardom with a spectacular 2020 season — and the 49ers rewarded him this summer with a $95.225 million deal that makes him the highest-paid inside linebacker in NFL history. By today’s standards, Warner’s performance last year was worth the money as he posted an Approximate Value of 19 — matching the highest score ever recorded by a San Francisco defender according to a Pro Football Reference formula that puts a single number on each player-season across all positions since 1960. Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman (twice) also had seasons with an AV of 19 as they dominate this list of the greatest individual seasons by a linebacker in 49ers history.
