Brother, it still rings true more than a half-century later when talking Washington Redskins.
A 3-11 season has seen the team with nothing to play for since firing Jay Gruden at 0-5. The battle of the second overall draft pick next spring is the big game now when hosting the New York Giants on Sunday. How sad is that?
Well, how sad was losing to the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 15 on some foolish decisions by interim coach Bill Callahan, who showed he doesn’t deserve a long-term extension. Washington threw away a win there before a crowd of 30,000 or so with 80 percent rooting for the Eagles. That means there were 5,000 or so Redskins fans in FedUp Field.
“Just what the truth is, I can’t say anymore,” sang the Moody Blues. Again, they’re singing about the Redskins.
The news to watch is whether owner Dan Snyder has the gumption to fire team president Bruce Allen and who’s the new coach. On Allen, I get no feeling he’s gone. Oh, Allen sure should be given a bus ticket after a decade of disasters, but Snyder doesn’t want to fire his golf buddy.
