You’re unlikely to find the answers on TV or in newspapers, but social media has proved to be a goldmine for fans wanting to have a closer look into the lives of their favourite Indian Premier League players when they’re off the field. From capturing special moments to generating localised content and even stories on players’ families and girlfriends, the eight franchises have teams working round the clock to keep fans engaged.
During the tournament, “a mini IPL goes on social media” was how one franchise boss put it. All eight teams have a presence on the three most popular online platforms – Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. And then there’s YouTube, which remains the destination of choice for videos. While most of the franchises have created small inhouse units of fivesix people that work in coordination with digital agencies, some have chosen to mostly internalise the work.
Each franchise has its own set of content writers who churn out stories keeping the local flavour in mind and working in shifts to ensure a 24hour presence on social media. At the same time, fourfive ‘correspondents’ travel with their teams regularly to get player interviews, post live updates and capture special moments, which are put up on the team websites in addition to their social media accounts.
