A WEEK of mixed news for Warwickshire, who have lost Ian Bell for the first three months of the season but have been boosted by Jeetan Patel taking over as their new T20 skipper.
Bell, 36, has undergone toe surgery after injuring himself in training for his Pakistan Super League side Islamabad United.
Bell was a key contributor last year for the Bears, compiling over 1,000 runs in first-class cricket as they bounced back into Division One of the County Championship.
But the Edgbaston outfit will have to make do without him at the outset of the new campaign – Paul Farbrace’s first at the helm.
“Once the surgery is completed, Ian will immediately start his rehabilitation programme,” said Warwickshire first-team coach Jim Troughton.
“There are always unknowns with surgery but Ian has always kept his fitness at the top level throughout his career.”
After the retirement of Grant Elliott, Patel becomes the T20 skipper for the Bears. The New Zealand spinner is therefore in charge across all three formats of the game and will hope to continue the Bears’ fine T20 form – they have reached Finals Day three times in the past five years.
“I’m really excited to be taking over as captain,” said the 38-year-old.
Nottinghamshire have been boosted by the re-signing of Australian Test bowler James Pattinson.
