Shakib Al Hasan isn’t getting carried away despite hitting a superb unbeaten 124 – his second ton in succession – to help Bangladesh complete the second highest chase in World Cup history and secure a seven-wicket victory over the West Indies.
Alongside Liton Das, who was making his World Cup debut, he put on an unbeaten 189 for the fourth wicket as Bangladesh reached their target of 322 with 51 balls to spare.
Shakib said: “I was determined, I wanted to do well to contribute for the team and it’s been going well but that doesn’t mean I can take anything for granted.
“There are four more matches to be played and, hopefully, we qualify. As I said, at this moment it’s been going well. I need to make sure I stay fresh, relaxed and keep on focusing on my game plan.”
Monday’s match at Taunton saw the West Indies make 321-8 in their 50 overs after a slow start in which they scored only 32 runs from the first ten overs – the lowest first powerplay score of the tournament.
Shai Hope top-scored with a leisurely 96 with further contributions coming from Evin Lewis (70) and Shimron Hetmyer, 50 from just 26 balls.
Bangladesh began the chase well, but two quick wickets ensured the game was in the balance with 19 overs played and the score at 133-3 before Shakib and Das took control.
