Richard Edwards recalls one spectacular incident at the 1992 World Cup that reminded everyone of the value of how good work in the field could influence the one-day game
It was the ‘Superman’ run out that changed the course of cricket history– and hastened a generation of JontyRhodes impersonators. Inzamam-ul-Haq was ushering Pakistan to victory in that inimitable way of his when Rhodes struck.
With keeper Dave Richardson still making his way to the stumps, Rhodes eschewed the traditional method of throwing the ball and simply sprinted at breakneck speed towards his target.
Admittedly, Inzamam was probably the ideal guinea pig for his experiment, with the Pakistan talisman never likely to qualify for a sprint event at the Olympics. Having already run halfway down the wicket before being sent back by his batting partner, Imran Khan, Inzamam was up against it from the off.
But Rhodes’ subsequent pelt and full length dive remains one of the most astonishing moments ever witnessed at a World Cup.
Suddenly, headlines weren’t about batsmen or bowlers but of a fielder who was redefining the art.
