Highveld Heritage
The route is really an adventure into history with heritage as its central theme. Its unique, very interesting and uplifting and it opens a window into a deeper understanding of South Africa’s hidden history. Developed by a passionate local tourism operator it’s a view of South Africa’s heritage and history showcased in a unique and uplifting way by local guides and specialists. Tours are interactive and offer both a sound and sight experience into the lost history of Africa, in a very real and hands on experience for visitors. Stretching across the south-eastern plateau and mountains of Mpumalanga the Highveld Heritage Route offers some inspiring heritage sites and is situated in an area with 270 fresh water lakes, an historic sandstone village with a battle site inside the town, a living indigenous Lake Bushmen, some of the oldest San Rock Art in South Africa and the mysterious walled settlements of an ancient culture situated on top of most of the hills in the area. A Giant Footprint called Goliaths Footprint which astounds visitors with its perfectly formed woman’s left footprint and is a whopping 1.8 meters, big enough to sit in and do a selfie if that’s your kind of thing, and some exciting Anglo Boer War Battle Sites, are only but a few of the offerings of this recently created tourism route in Mpumalanga.
