A Royal Romance Between South Korea And India Celebrated In The Historical Town Of Gimhae.
At the entrance to the Gaya Theme Park in the South Korean city of Gimhae, a line of children wait to take advantage of a photo-op. A girl with a sippy cup in her hand and an orange stain around her lips smiles sweetly for a camera, her face framed by a golden egg prop.
The children here are all familiar with Kim Suro, the founder of the kingdom of Geumgwan Gaya. In Korean, there is no letter “g,” so its phonetic pronunciation is somewhere between “g” and “k,” and “kim” or “geum” is the word for gold. According to legend, six eggs, each of which held a great king, descended from the heavens in a golden basket wrapped in red cloth, and were found on turtle-shaped Guji Mountain. Kim Suro hatched out of one of these.
Surrounded by lush mountains, the theme park is a celebration of Suro’s marriage to Suriratna, his Indian bride, believed to be from the kingdom of Ayodhya. Suro and Suriratna, also known as Queen Heo Hwang-ok, are as familiar to Koreans as Ram and Sita are to Indians. They believe the romance that transcended geographical borders was scripted by the gods themselves.
