Baga is perhaps the most well known beach in India. With its iconic nightlife this sunny beach has captured the imagination of tourists from all over. Amina explores the bitter sweet experience of Baga
BAGA- A TALE OF EXCESS AND EXTREME Say the word Baga and you get two reactions. The tourists (first timers at least) will be like, ‘Wow! When?? Let’s go!’ While the experienced travelers and locals react with groans and eye-rolls and quips like, “seriously? It’s not what it used to be…”
So you see, Baga elicits extreme emotions. What was once an idyllic stretch home to Goa’s first shack St Anthony’s and the iconic Titos, is now overcrowded and burdened with tourist traffic. You have a beach that is stunning to say the least but at the same time teaming with tourists and vendors waiting to grab a piece of the ‘Goa Dream’. Shacks jostling for space and relevance, each boasting of an in house DJ who constantly belts out loud bhangra pop or EDM. All in all Baga, which was at one time the beach that had the most recall value outside of Goa, is now an experience far from it. That said, it is still one of the most famous beaches in India and attracts the maximum tourist crowd.
