With eco-consciousness becoming a buzzword, the beauty industry—both in India and abroad—is increasingly turning to natural ingredients. BHG tracks the trend and how this affects your beauty regimen.
When Delhi-based fashion designer Aarti Kapur, 42, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and was undergoing chemotherapy, she began creating her own beauty products with her sister. The duo based their research on the concoctions—made primarily with herbs, grains and nuts, and free of chemicals or preservatives—they had seen their mother and grandmother prepare for them when they were growing up. Suffering from hair loss, and patchy, sallow skin caused by the treatment, Aarti tried these blends on herself. Every day her skin improved, so much so that her family and friends asked for the products. This led to her establishing her skin and haircare brand in 2015. Marigold Naturals’ organic range is safe even for toddlers.
Today, there are several such natural, homegrown beauty brands in the country that can trace their inception to personal experiences. Just Herbs, Just B Au Naturel, SoulTree, Organic Harvest and Kama Ayurveda are a few that have managed to create a niche in India’s booming natural beauty market. “Globally, the natural beauty industry is estimated to reach ₹ 80,000 cr this year,” says Aradhika S Mehta, Head Marketing of The Body Shop India. “A decade ago, the Indian sector was valued at ₹ 250 cr, and with increasing demand, jumped to ₹ 460 cr in 2016.”
