I’ve had a catheter fitted twice By Hayley Green, 29, from Yeovil Determined I just have to live with it.
A sleep in bed, a familiar feeling woke me.
Not again, I thought, pulling myself up.
I’d got up to have a wee five times already.
And now I needed to go again.
Yet even after weeing, the urge to urinate still wouldn’t pass.
Aged 18, it had come on out of nowhere.
When it started happening most nights, I spoke to my GP.
A cystoscopy failed to show any problems with my bladder, though.
‘It’s nothing to worry about,’ my doctor said, brushing it off.
So over the years, I just learnt to live with it.
Then, in summer 2015, when I was 27, out of nowhere, I developed a sudden urge to wee.
My bladder felt full, painful.
Yet when I went to the toilet,
I could only go slowly and was in agony.
At Yeovil District Hospital, I was put under while doctors inflated my bladder with water and examined it.
When I came round after, doctors had answers…
‘We found a stricture in your urethra,’ I was told.
It meant my urethra had narrowed, restricting urine flow.
‘It’s very rare in women, it usually affects men,’ one of the doctors explained.
