It’s a still and sombre evening in the Cape Town city centre...

The rain has just settled, and I can hear the distant swoosh of car tyres on Bree Street as I sit in the lobby of the hotel. The rotating doors catch me by surprise, and in walks Nadia Nakai. She is dressed to battle the cold – cosy and layered in Ivy Park, making her a verified #BeyHive member. It’s been over a week since she launched her much-anticipated debut album, Nadia Naked. ‘Things have been so crazy since I dropped the album,’ she says as we walk to her hotel room. It’s the day before her COSMOPOLITAN cover shoot, after which she flies up for an appearance at the Vodacom Durban July. She is booked, busy and beaming.

We sit down, and just as we settle in for the interview she asks, ‘Would you mind if I ordered wings?’ We both laugh and I help her place her order. Soon the anticipation for warm, crispy chicken gets our mouths watering and our conversation going.

Nadia is fast proving that she is no novelty in the hip-hop industry. Her infectious club bangers have been the anthems for many a dance floor during recent years. From Afro-beat-inspired songs such as Saka Wena to boss-babe tracks such as Naaa Meaan, Nadia has earned her spot as a trendsetter.
