Back home in Britainthere are fears for the health of the Queen, but half a world away in the Caribbean, future king Prince William and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge were showing tha the monarchy is in safe hands
Her Majesty’s increasing frailty – according to some reports, the 95-year-old is now using a wheelchair much of the time behind the scenes – is cause for concern. But the monarch herself will have watched the skill and confidence with which her grandson and his wife undertook a visit to Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas on her behalf, and been able to relax, knowing they have done her proud.
“Obviously the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are not novices when it comes to overseas tours – they’ve represented Her Majesty on numerous occasions since they married 10 years ago,” says a member of the royal household. “But as the Queen becomes less able to carry out duties herself, it will be comforting to her to know the Cambridges are continuing to generate goodwill for the royal family, particularly in places where there is no longer the same level of support for the monarchy that there once was.”
They’re referring to the couple’s visit to Jamaica, where there’s talk of removing the Queen as Head of State. That presented Kate, 40, and William, 39, with a challenge, but the pair are adept at charm and diplomacy, and have continued to foster the British royal family’s long and close relationship with the island nation.
