Now Is The Perfect Time Of Year To Stop And Smell The Roses.
A few weeks ago, we had the Tutukaka Coast Garden Club visit our garden. With about a month’s warning to try to turn the place from a work-in-progress to a pristine park, The Partner went into overdrive and had 90% of our two acres looking good.
The garden club came, said lovely things about the garden, went, and we put our feet up and congratulated ourselves.
The best thing about it, apart from meeting lots of charming gardeners, was that for the next two or three weeks we had nothing to do in the garden at the weekends. We did Saturday shopping. We took the dog for walks. We went out to lunch. We visited friends. We went for Sunday drives. We bought a small barbecue because it seemed, during this idyllic “no garden work” period, that we might have time to use it.
It was a timely wake-up call that gardens are there to be enjoyed, and we vowed to spend less time slaving and more time revelling. The first change was imposing a “no planning” rule on our evening walks around the property.
