THE PRINCE HAS INVITED HIS BLACK SHEEP AUNT TO HIS WEDDING
All eyes will, of course, be on the bride when Meghan Markle marries Prince Harry next month.
But glances are sure to be cast in the direction of another woman attending the nuptials and her behaviour at the event is likely to be closely scrutinised.
After much speculation, it seems that Harry’s aunt Sarah, Duchess of York, is going to be on the guest list for the wedding of the year.
It’s thanks to Harry (33) that Fergie will be there. She wasn’t invited to the much larger wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton back in 2011, and it was assumed Fergie (58) would also be persona non grata when it came to Harry’s big day. She’s not popular with some members of the royal family – Prince Philip apparently can’t bear her – and senior courtiers want to keep her at arm’s length because of the scandals she has been involved in over the years.
But Harry has strong opinions about who he wants at his wedding. “Harry has nailed his colours to the mast on this,” reveals a royal aide. “He absolutely, 100 percent wants her there and has told palace officials that in no uncertain terms.”
Harry’s move to include Fergie is typical of his thoughtfulness, say those who know him. He’s endured his own share of personal embarrassments, such as being pilloried for wearing a Nazi costume to a fancy dress party.
“While Fergie may have exhibited poor judgment over the years and got herself into terrible messes, Harry would absolutely see that she is a nice woman who found being in the royal family extremely difficult,” says royal biographer Penny Junor, author of Prince Harry: Brother, Soldier, Son.
